*sigh* yup it’s officially the end of 2017…
2017 has been the first year where Trump is actually president.
2017 has been the year where same-sex marriages have finally become legal in Australia.
2017 has been the year where Emmanuel Macron won France’s presidential election.
2017 has been the year of so many horrible shootings.
2017 has been the year of The Rohingya Crisis.
2017 has been the year of more global warming. It’s the second warmest year in history. The first one? 2016.
2017 has been the year where Trump announced that the United States would leave the Paris Climate Agreement.
2017 has been the year of so many changes, catastrophes and maybe a few good events. We hear in the media about all the terrible things happening around the world and it feels like all hope is lost. Some animals are nearly extinct and glaciers are melting. It’s hard to think positive after reading a few articles about this.
And people tell you to look on the bright side but how are you supposed to do that when you feel like there is no bright side?
Maybe there is still hope. Maybe we really should look on the bright side. Maybe if we all do something small, we can make a difference. It doesn’t even have to be something big. Instead of throwing plastic away, we could recycle it. If we all do something like that, so many recyclable materials could be reused.
Maybe we aren’t doomed because a few stupid human beings are slowing down the process of helping the earth.
We’ve only got one earth to live on (for the moment). But all we do is ruin it. We throw away perfectly good food because the labels say it’s expired. We can’t even be bothered to stand up and throw away that plastic wrapper in the bin. We’re polluting so much that in some cities, you can’t even go outside without a breathing mask.
Yes, we are doing horrible things to our planet and if we don’t stop, yes, someday, our planet is going to die.
But I still believe we can change it. Maybe if we all start doing small things for our planet every day, we will be able to do something. I don’t believe it’s going to be easy or fast or always successful but I really do think that we can at least go in the right direction.
And I know it’s boring and people don’t want to hear it. I don’t always care either. But raising awareness is the first step. And that’s what I’m trying to do for the moment.
I don’t have many resolutions this year but one of them is doing at least one good thing a day. I’m going to try to recycle more things. I’m going to try to use less water and electricity. I’m going to try to make donations to foundations around the world.
Even if it’s small, even if nobody notices, I want to try.
What are your resolutions for the new year?
