Such a common word these days
We hear it all the time used in so many ways
You would think after years, we have cars and phones, even modern doorways
Yet somehow we still can’t love each other?
You see, all through history, people have been discriminated, beaten up, enslaved because they’re different
Nobody was ever free, we were all just animals locked up told that we weren’t,
The rich were content, see their life was easy
But all the others,
No, they weren’t worth mentioning, they’re filthy, they said
It’s all over now
We live in a world where women can work and we’re all free
Things have changed, you say
Oh but I disagree
See we may be free
But all those people,
The ones that are called terrorists, the ones that are gay, transgender, African, Latino, Asian
They still fight for their rights
They still can’t walk down the streets without cold glares or looks filled with fright
We have come a long way, now, here, in 2018
But rape still ruins lives
And it’s so crazy that we still protest to uncover these lies
Women come out with their stories yet their assaulter still walks down the street
‘She shouldn’t wear those clothes if she doesn’t want to be touched’ they say
No, you should just control those hands and ask if you may
To the people who see others suffer
Ask their story and then shut up and listen
Listen, listen and then yell at the top of your lungs
Be a voice for all those who have prisoner tongues
For the people who had to grow up way too young
There is work to be done
There are songs to be sung
Lord knows there’s a war to be won
As it’s Valentine’s day (well it was yesterday), I wanted to write something a bit different than I normally do. I’m not sure if I like the way it turned out but its’ my first time writing a sort of poem. If anyone has any tips or ways I could improve myself, please comment down below! I’d love to learn new things!
The last paragraph was written by Halsey for the Women’s march in New York (I have mixed it up a bit though). Her words were really touching and I couldn’t help but put them in this poem.
I think it’s really important to stand up to all the negativity that we read in the media. Obviously, we have come a long way these last years but there is still work to be done.
I hope you had an amazing Valentine’s day if it was with your family or special someone!
